Silence

Her mind closes in,
instinct takes over
as she shields her face-
the window to the world,
while the person she is
withdraws so far
and the lover, the wife,
the friend she is no more.
Her body bruised
yet no pain she perceives
no tears, none left
but the sudden gasp
of searing desperation.
He leaves, his anger spent
falls into a dreamless slumber.
Lying on the floor,
her spirit cries out,
freedom! on the other side
of the thin brick wall.

No manacle restrains her
but the unseen shackles
of a mind numbed.
Numbed by disbelief, fear
then the fickle relief
of indifference,
away from the painful reality
of a steady stream of thought.

She picks herself up
then the pieces of a broken vase.

-
The many faces of the protagonist of this story live among us. I pray that when we know her we will not be silent nor indifferent.
